Welfare support

Our welfare referrals decreased during 2025/26 due to the Universal Credit (UC) reform plus we had a dedicated UC Officer to support these cases. We are now seeing much more complex cases resulting in an increase in appointments, 1,675 compared to 1,548 in the previous year.

For 2025/26 we managed 1,524 Universal Credit (UC) cases, supporting residents from basic queries like helping them update their rent amount (on their UC claim) to more complex situations like changes in tenancy (a relationship breakdown for example) advising how residents keep UC up to date with any changes affecting their living situation.

Supporting the migration from the Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and other legacy benefits to Universal Credit (UC), took a lot more time than anticipated. Helping residents set up accounts and walking them through the UC process was very different to how previous legacy benefits were paid

The Welfare Team managed more complex cases where residents transitioned from Employment Support Allowance onto Universal Credit. They saw an increase in residents applying for a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and residents with mental health issues and barriers affecting employment.

The Cost of Living was still having an impact on residents trying to manage their income; as household bills increased many residents were reporting that they would have to earn a certain amount to afford their rent if they took on employment.

The team assisted with budgeting and funding for white goods, carpeting, rent arrears, and ineligible service charges.
